The (purposely short) article you are about to read was published as a demonstration during the Professional Development & Social Media Symposium.

At this very moment (or on Wednesday, January 13th, 2016, for those of you who aren’t reading this at the exact moment it was published) I am speaking at the Professional Development & Social Media Symposium held at the Nassau Country Club on Long Island. This event is being hosted by Meaghan Janedis, owner of Legacy Sport and partner at Glam Slam Gear.

A Commitment to Long Island Businesses. And Musicians!

Reading Time: 2 minutes
As 2015 gets rolling, I just want to take a moment to talk about keeping it local. As a company, Electric Bricks doesn’t use too many other service companies. Obviously we use web hosting, email and domain services. But for value and performance reasons we’ve opted to use large, national companies for these. On the other hand, Gimenez Guitars, a new company I recently started with a long-time friend of mine, Dan Gimenez, is a bit different. Gimenez Guitars is a manufacturing company. And as a local manufacturer we are looking very hard to utilize other local businesses as often as possible. As I’m sure many of you know, it isn’t always easy to find what you need on Long Island. But we are doing our best to find service and material suppliers here at home rather than in other states.

Gimenez Guitars – A New Project. A New Endeavor.

Reading Time: 2 minutes
This has been an especially busy year for Electric Bricks. Many new clients and many new projects for existing clients. But there’s one project that I haven’t mentioned yet. It’s one that’s been in the works for… well… years. A few years back a long-time friend of mine, Dan Gimenez, developed a new body style for an electric guitar. I won’t go into all the details about what makes it so special (yet!) but the two of us decided that the music world needed a fresh perspective on a traditional instrument so we joined forces and launched Gimenez Guitars LLC.

Electric Bricks Gets a Facelift

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Been to electricbricks.net lately? If you have, you may have noticed that it looks quite a bit different. It’s been over 2 years since I updated the theme on the site and it was overdue! The old layout, while good for it’s time, had started looking a bit dated. The content layout had grown cluttered, the brick motif wasn’t working for me anymore, and the navigation was minimal, at best. After spending a good deal of time planning, I decide to practice what I preach to all my clients, and make some significant changes.

Happy Birthday, World Wide Web!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Web is (Only) 25 Years Old Today

It’s pretty hard to believe that the Internet, as we know it, is only 25 years old. That’s right. Today, March 12th, is officially the birthday of the World Wide Web, and by human standards I feel it’s only now starting to get it’s $#!t together. The infant and toddler years when everything was new are long behind us. The preteen years when no one knew what it’s potential was yet are also done. (I think we can all see the awesome possibilities that the Web holds.) Even the teenage years where everything was a little wild and mature standards were finally being hammered out seem to have come to a close.

Am I Allowed to Use This?

I Am NOT A Copyright Expert!

I repeat, I am NOT a copyright expert! Nor do I understand intellectual property law or trademark law. But I can tell you this – if you are ever in doubt about whether you should reuse, repurpose, rewrite, transcribe, copy, or “borrow” something that someone else created then don’t. There are plenty of attorneys that make their living practicing (and defending) copyright law so if you have a burning question about what is legal I’d advise you to find one. What I’m sharing below is my layman’s understanding of what I think you should be aware of. But it is by no means intended to be a definitive guide to copyright law. In other words, don’t rely on this article to tell you everything you need to know. Do your own research and check out the links mentioned in this article for more information. And of course – use common sense!

Customizing Views in the WordPress Dashboard

Reading Time: 2 minutes

WordPress Screen Options TabHave you ever gone into one of the list views in WordPress, such as the All Posts or All Pages list, and thought the view was too cluttered and confusing? Well, there’s a simple way to clean up almost any view to show only the information you need to see. Log into your Dashboard and navigate to the list you’d like to customize and take a look in the top-right corner. You should see a tab called Screen Options with a small down-arrow. Click the tab to expand it and, depending upon the options installed on your site, you should see something that looks like this:

show-on-screen

All you need to do is uncheck the columns of information you don’t want to see. It’s that easy. All Electric Bricks client sites have the WordPress SEO plugin installed and it adds 4 new columns to almost every list view: SEO, SEO Title, Meta Desc. and Focus KW. By default all of these are turned on. To hide them, just uncheck them, like I did here, and you won’t see them in that list any longer.

If you have lots of posts or pages on your site you may also be frustrated with the relatively small number of items shown in a list. By default, WordPress only shows 20 items in a list. But as you can see from my settings above, I’ve increased my list to show 50 at a time. This can make finding a particular post or page much quicker.

search-postsOf course, don’t forget that you can always just do a search to find that needle in a haystack. You’ll find the search field in the upper-right corner of a list view, just below the Screen Options tab. Just type in a word that’s in the title or body of the page you’re looking for and you’ll quickly get back a list of results.

9 Photo Editing Tools for Blog & Website Owners

I'm a fan of Social Media Examiner

There are a few social media and web marketing blogs that I follow pretty regularly. Social Media Examiner is one of them. They consistently produce relevant, easily digestible articles to help you get a better handle on your social media efforts. Their recent article, “6 Simple Photo Tools for Creating Social Media Visuals“, offered up several easy-to-use Photoshop alternatives that could not only be used for creating graphics for social content, as the article suggests, but for blog articles and web pages, as well. In the article they quickly outline the strengths of each tool and show an example of what can be created with it. Read the article to get the list (most of them are free!) and see if any of them could be beneficial to you.
