Facebook – Welcome to the Metaverse

Reading Time: < 1 minute

As we recently discussed, Facebook Inc. has rebranded and updated its name to Meta. You may have noticed that the Meta logo now appears when logging into the latest version of Instagram. But aside from a simple name change, what does this mean for the company moving forward?

The Future of Meta

“The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection. Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so we are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future.”

As described on Meta’s recently launched website, which redirects you to the new Meta section on Facebook.com, their primary goals pertain to developing technologies that blur the lines between reality and the digital world. A subsidiary of Meta founded in 2012, Oculus VR, has a VR gaming product line that is currently the most tangible representation of these technologies. As of now, Meta seems to be focusing on areas and products including:

  • Virtual reality
  • Augmented reality
  • Developing Smart Glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban

PR Stunt or Corporate Transformation?

As many of these so-called Metaverse technologies have been in the works for years, I still believe rebranding to Meta was the company formerly known as Facebook Inc.’s attempt to sway public opinion in a positive direction. However, I am looking forward to watching how these new technologies unfold and improve in days to come.
