“So Now What?” – Creating Content for Your New Website

Reading Time: 2 minutes

OK, the first step is done. You contacted me a few months ago and we worked together to create a beautiful website that you and your visitors love. But the site’s been up for a while now and you’ve noticed that your visitor counts have either leveled off or are dropping. What gives? Is something wrong?

Well, ask yourself a question. When was the last time you added something to your site? Some fresh content. An update on your company. Some interesting industry news. Anything. Visitors to websites are like visitors to museums – if there’s never anything but the same old, dusty dinosaurs to see what’s the point in coming back. They want to see something new.

Add to that the fact that Google rewards sites that are constantly publishing new content with higher SERP (search engine results page) rankings and your site may not even be found by potential visitors if everything on it is old and stale.

So now you might be saying to yourself “OK, so what am I supposed to be writing about?” Well, the truth is I don’t know. I don’t know your business like you know your business. And I don’t know your customers. And I don’t know your products or services. Knowing about these are things that make you good at what you do. And the best way to let the world know how much you know about your industry is to tell them. And lucky for you, you’ve got a beautiful website to do it on.

But getting started can be difficult. Thankfully, the folks at the Google Webmaster Academy have a lot of tools to help new site owners out. In the video below, Alexi Douvas of the Google Search Quality Team, gives some great advice on things you could be doing and what not to worry about when writing for your website. Take a minute and 23 seconds to watch it and you’ll see that creating great content is not as difficult as it sounds.
