What’s the Significance of Facebook’s Rebranding?

After Facebook’s recent internal document leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen, the company has been subject to intensified scrutiny from its userbase, leading to ongoing government investigations. And while Facebook had been planning on transitioning from being a social media brand to what Mark Zuckerberg has termed “a metaverse company” before these events, the timing of Facebook’s name change is no coincidence.

Facebook, Inc.

If you’re worrying that you won’t be able to find the Facebook app icon on your smartphone after the upcoming name change, this won’t be an issue. Facebook is not changing the name of its eponymous social media platform.

This situation is similar to Google becoming a subsidiary of Alphabet in 2015. Since Facebook’s purchase of Facebook.com in 2005, it has acquired upwards of 75 companies. The most notable acquisitions include Instagram, WhatsApp, LiveRail, and Oculus VR. The upcoming name change pertains to Facebook, Inc., the parent company and owner of these subsidiaries.

Will Facebook’s New Name Make a Difference?

So, Facebook, Inc. is updating its name, attempting to rebrand itself as more than a social media platform, simultaneously struggling to usher the public away from focusing on the upsurge in negative press coverage. The official name change announcement is supposedly happening today. Do you think it will make a difference in brand perception?
